BCTTA LeTTers: January 1977

From the BCTTA Archives is this 8-page, 5th edition of the BCTTA LeTTers publication from January 1974, with editor-in-chief Eric Calveley at the publishing helm. It features a cover story by Greg Eng on Paul Albrecht’s surprise win over Eddy Lo in the Richmond Open; Art Barran reports on a classic battle in the finals between Leslee Ward and Merle Baggoo. Also inside are:

  • The ever-popular “Harry’s Column” where he opines over the Richmond Open; suggests the creation of a Super League for the benefit of the top-ranked players; and laments over all-talk-and-no-action of the BCTTA executive of the day
  • An editorial on the dismal turnout of players and spouses at the annual V&DTT League season’s end party and awards
  • Chandra reports on the BC Junior Championships held at Britannia School
  • An official apology to Gerry “Hawer” Hamer on the miss-spelling of the newcomer’s name
  • In an editorial titled “The Idle Tax”, editor-in-chief Eric Calveley suggests incentivizing the effort to get the BCTTA board members of the day to do their jobs
  • The BCTTA President’s Report, among other things, laments on the lack of volunteers from the table tennis community when it comes to running tournaments
  • A new ranking system for BC players is introduced
  • Eric pens a letter to the City of Vancouver complaining about its unannounced decision to cancel plans to look into a proposed table tennis centre in a city-owned building
  • A profile of local superstar Zoltan Pataky who had immigrated from Hungary to completely disrupt the competitive table tennis scene in BC
  • Richmond Open, 1977: the complete results
  • LeTTers receives accolades on its in-depth table tennis journalism from around the globe
  • Coaching Clinic Report from Chandra Madhosingh
  • The announcement of a BC Team Squad to groom players to become the best BC has to offer
  • BC Rankings list
  • V&DTT League Standings
